How does Neuragen® work?
Results from animal studies indicate that Neuragen® reduces the spontaneous firing of damaged peripheral nerves. By calming these aberrant electrical signals at the source, Neuragen® reduces neuropathic (nerve) pain quickly and without the side effects of orally taken medications. This is in part due to lipophilic molecules found in Neuragen® which rapidly carry the active ingredients through the tough outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum) to the site of the pain.

See your health care professional if symptoms persist or worsen, or if new symptoms develop. Neuragen has a strong floral aroma which may cause reactions in people with aroma sensitivities. Neuragen® is not recommended for muscular pain or arthritis unless at least one of the following symptoms are present; shooting, tingling, prickling, or burning pain or sensitivity to touch.

How often should I use Neuragen® ?
Apply a few drops or spray to the affected area several times a day or as needed. Apply enough to cover the entire area. For efficient application to wider areas, we recommend diluting 4-5 drops of Neuragen® in 1 tablespoon of a suitable carrier oil (such as olive or mineral oil) prior to application. Use no more than 4 times daily. Neuragen® is concentrated-apply only a few drops as applying more than a few drops at a time may not improve effectiveness. Upon first application, the patient may experience rapid relief-usually within 30 minutes. If relief is not experienced with the first application, patient should repeat the application over a period of three days.

I have neuropathy in the ball of my right foot. I have tried gabapentin but it does not seem to work well. I get some relief but not 100%. Will neuragen work for this condition? I have taken 300 mg of gabapentin this morning, how long should I wait before trying Neuragen? Thank you.

The advantage of Neuragen is that, as a topical, you can apply it right to the area of the pain (i.e. the ball of your foot). We know of no interactions with gabapentin so there is no need to wait before applying Neuragen.

My son is 17 and has neuropathy in his hands, arms, legs and feet. Do you think this product will help his pain???

Neuragen is recommended for all types of neuropathy.

Hi Dr. Alex, My husband had surgery on his leg about 10 years ago, and now has constant pain in that area - the surgery left him with partial peroneal nerve neuropathy. Can Neuragen help with post-surgical pain and/or nerve damage? Thanks.

Any trauma, including surgery, that damages nerves can lead to chronic pain. Neuragen typically does help relieve this kind of pain.

How often may I use Neuragen PN and may I use it over the same area each and every time?

You may use Neuragen up to four times per day. Neuragen can be applied over the same area of the body at the four times per day frequency.

I have nerve damage in my back from a fall 2/14/97. In August 2008, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Generally, the pain occurs only at night as soon as I lay down. I get pain that starts in my feet and ankles and up my leg. It feels more like the pain is pulsating and I have to get up and move my legs such as in rocking in a chair, walking back and forth and massaging my legs. My feet are generally blue and cold and I experience tingling and numbness. I'm on several medications for my back injury. Although I'm sure my problem is related to nerve pain, I'm not sure if its from my back injury or the diabetes? Will this product work for the pulsating pain I get?

The symptoms you describe ("pulsating" or "throbbing", tingling, numbness) are common symptoms of pain caused by nerve damage, also known as "neuropathic pain". Pain in the feet, ankles and legs may be related to nerve damage in the back (due to the injury you sustained) and due to damage to the nerves in your legs and feet caused by diabetes. Typically, for diabetic nerve damage, we recommend application of Neuragen to the area of nerve damage which is where the pain also located (i.e. the feet and sometimes legs). However, for foot pain due to back injury or nerve compression we recommend application of Neuragen to the low back area, which can be the source of the foot pain. Since you have diabetes and a history of low back pain, I suggest you apply Neuragen to both feet and lower back.

I have numbness, burning and prickling in my toes at night. It feels like they are on fire and when I put them in bath water, they are so tender. I was going to give this product a try. I don't have health insurance until September, so I need some relief. Can you help me? Can I buy this product at Walgreens?

Neuragen is available at Walgreens. The item number is #507906 (Walgreens only). If your store does not have it in stock you can request it.

How long can you use Neuragen? Does your body get immune to it like with prescriptions over time?

We have case reports of individuals using products similar to Neuragen for ten years without loss of effectiveness. Some people report that over time they need to use less Neuragen to get the same pain reduction.

I am not diabetic, but the neurologist says I have nerve problems in both feet and legs, due to the fact that the protective covering has gone from the nerves in my feet and legs. I am 82 yrs old. It is painful to wear shoes and to walk, even using a cane, I have an enlarged heart, a mechinical heart valve (aortic). What kind of side effects can I expect with my heart medication with Neuragen? None of the medications the neurologist prescribed have helped, and most have made me ill. I take pain pills, but they do very little to help as I am constantly in pain. Will Neuragen help?

One of the advantages of Neuragen is that it is applied topically. Very little is absorbed, so there is minimal risk of side effects or drug interactions. We have never had a report of an interaction between Neuragen and any heart medications.

My husband has type 2 diabetes. Recently diagnosed 6 months ago. He is going great getting his blood sugar down and his A1C. He has problems with his feet. Stabbing pains, feels like they are swollen and they aren't, his pain is never the same. It is something different in one foot or the other. His feet are extremely sensitive to touch. It feels good when he takes his shoes and socks off, just for awhile. He is not taking any medication for his foot pain. He has experienced sweaty feet, having to change sock frequently, burning sensation, feels warm to the touch at times. They just feel weird and there is no pattern to their behavior. We are trying to find something natural that will work. At night, when he lies down to go to bed is when it gets to be the worse, alot of these symptoms I just mentioned start in. They keep him awake, he can't get comfortable, sleeps with no covers on his feet, and just tosses and turns until he finally falls asleep. Will this Neuragen help?

Neuragen has helped many people with these types of symptoms to reduce their pain and, consequently, sleep better.

I would like to know if Neuragen pn can be taken by mouth? I would like to know if Neuragen Gel would help? I have diabetic neuropathy.

Neuragen and NeuraGel are both topical treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. They are not to be taken internally ie. by mouth. - Dr. Alex

I have diabetes 2 and currently taken alpha-lipoic acid to control my diabetes (the doctor took me off diabetes medicine and approved the alpha-liopic). Does diabetes cause the sensitivity of the feet? Thank you.

High levels of glucose (a kind of sugar) in the blood may actually damage the nerves in the feet, leading to "sensitivity". - Dr. Alex

My brother has neuropathy and has significant pain in feet. He has been subscribed Lyrica and it has helped a little. Can he use Neuragen in conjunction with Lyrica?

Topical treatments for pain such as Neuragen typically have lower risks for side effects and drug interactions. Many pain sufferers use Neuragen regularly along with prescription drugs, and to date there have been no reported interactions. In fact, we have many reports of people being able to lower their dose of prescription drugs by using Neuragen. Also, in clinical trials of Neuragen, subjects taking oral prescription drugs did not report any interactions with Neuragen. Thus, Neuragen can be used daily to control painful neuropathy, along with prescription medications. - Dr. Alex

I have been taking Lyrica for several months now and am responding nicely. I am in a desperate situation while waiting for determination of SSDI by the SSA and cannot afford to keep buying it. I have been RXed by the PA to start taking Gabapentin when I run out of Lyrica to tide me over until I can afford Lyrica. I have had doctors playing gopher with my meds all of my life and have even almost died and gone into a coma from them messing with my meds. I know that Gabapentin works on receptors differently, but I don't know how they work (& work differently). The PA is not concerned about me changing over and then back to Lyrica when I can afford it - but none of the doctors in the past have been either. I am the one who will suffer and/or die if my medical stability & safety is compromised. Where can I get the answers I need about the relationship between Gabapentin & Lyrica? I also wanted to know if Neuragen could replace them. I take more drugs than I like for my chronic nerve pain(s) - breakthru' exacerbates past excruciating to unbearable. If I could be taking something topically instead of orally, wouldn't that be preferable or is Neuragen just something that tides you over until the oral meds kick in? I desperately await your response. Thank you in advance.

We cannot comment on your prescription medications over the internet, as that is something to discuss with your doctors. However, I would like to let you know that we have many reports of people being able to lower their dose of prescription drugs by using Neuragen topically. And you are correct in saying there are advantages to topical treatments, such as lower risk of side effects. Topical treatments like Neuragen are NOT just useful to "tide you over till the oral meds kick in". Neuragen can be used daily indefinitely to control painful neuropathy. - Dr. Alex
